Word Study (Spelling)

During Word Study we examine, manipulate, compare, and categorize words in order to understand the patterns in our written language. The goal is that students will achieve mastery in recognizing, spelling, and defining specific words.

Each week students will examine a unique set of words that share certain features. Students will be examining features such as vowel teams, syllables, prefixes and suffixes, or Greek and Latin roots. Each list of words will be sorted into three or four related but distinct categories.

For example, below is a list of words from a sort focusing on Unaccented Final Syllables. A particularly tricky sort! Students would then sort the words under the appropriate given headings: -le, -el, -al, -il, and Oddball.

Cattle, unit, total, novel, couple, signal, evil, model, level, saddle, fossil, cancel, special, journal, pencil, final, April, angel, metal, fragile, angle, local
